My 1.9 TDI is due a service now. over the week end the oil warning light came on together with a check oil level message. On checking the dip stick the oil was down to the lower mark. I topped up with just over half a litre of oil which brought it up to the upper mark. there are no oil leaks on the engine . the car has covered 20000miles in total. should i be expecting this sort of oil consumption in 7000 miles of motoring between services?

Simple answer - Yes.
The PD engines can use a litre of oil quite easily in 20k, often more.

Hi PJR
My 2.0 TDi Touran's currently using anything up to a litre every 5k.
My previous Golf and Passat both had 1.9TDi engines (both 130 BHP), and both used a lot of oil. At peak (about 12-14k miles on the clock) I was going through a litre of oil every 1,000 miles on the Passat.
It soon got better as it got closer to the first longlife service at about 18k miles, and then was immeasurably better after that service.
I figured I'd done 2 oil changes before it reached the 18k mile service

I have a theory that the engine management system notices when the oil is getting dirty and burns it on purpose so you will add some fresh.
On my old 1.9 I had to add oil quite often between services, but not regularly and I couldn't identify a cause of the oil consumption.
Dishwashers have a turbidity (dirty) sensor for the water within the cycle and the programmer then decides to dump some and replace it with fresh, can our engines do this too?

Oil consumption is normal on these engines VW/Audi only consider it high if they use 1lt per 600miles! Our 2.0TDI uses 1lt every 7K or so, so 2 top ups beween the longlife service.
